International Year of Light 2015

On 20 December 2013, The United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015).

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies 2015 is underway.
This International Year is the initiative of a large consortium of scientific bodies together with UNESCO, and will bring together many different stakeholders including scientific societies and unions, educational institutions, technology platforms, non-profit organizations and private sector partners.

One part of the programme is Cosmic Light
The importance of light reaches far beyond life on Earth. Through major scientific discoveries and technological advancements, light has helped us to see and better understand the universe. Discover breakthroughs in Astronomy, view stunning images of the cosmos, and learn more about dark skies.

The New Zealand programme provides the opportunity to raise public awareness of astronomy in its various forms, from science to recreation, from aurora to astrophotography to campaigning for dark skies. Events such as Stardates, Photographic Competitions, RASNZ Conference and Affiliated Societies Meetings and more could be registered on this site. IYL2015 also have Social Media presence on Facebook, Twitter and others.
