Treasurer for NZ’s National Astronomical Society

The Royal Astronomical Society New Zealand (RASNZ) is seeking a suitable person to take on the voluntary role of Treasurer. This is an important role within RASNZ and the new appointee will be a key member of Management Council that makes strategic decisions and administers RASNZ.

Formal accounting qualifications or prior experience in a similar role are not necessary but would be highly valued. This role does not preclude holders of similar positions in other astronomical societies.

Modernisation of the function over the past few years includes maintaining the books on Xero, the use of online payments using Stripe and POLi and integration with membership management tool Sporty. All these implementations are complete and has made the role easier to manage.

This role can be undertaken entirely from the home office with all systems cloud based and available online and the monthly RASNZ Management Council meetings conducted virtually on Zoom.

The responsibilities of the Treasurer include: i) Maintain the RASNZ's financial records; ii) Manage the RASNZ bank accounts and funds set aside for designated purposes; iii) Administer the collection of monies and the payment of accounts; iv) Oversee the budget, accounting and financial reporting relating to the annual conference ; v) At the end of the financial year, prepare the Performance Report to be audited and to be included in the Council's Annual Report; and vi); file the Performance Report with the Charities Commission and Incorporated Society Registers annually.

This offers a great opportunity for someone to contribute to the nationwide support and promotion of astronomy, science education and related research.
